How to Voice Virtually?

your voice

Creating your personal synthesized voice starts with banking (recording) your voice in a quiet space using a microphone and computer or tablet. Traditional voice synthesis companies record you through their online platforms, while AI voice cloning typically uses recordings you create yourself. See 01 Traditional Voice Synthesis and 02 AI Voice Cloning below.

After you submit recordings, the company generates your custom voice—this can take minutes to weeks. Quality varies based on your recordings and the service, so it’s best to record with multiple providers.

Recording and samples are often free, but fees and terms to use the voice vary.

Once created, your voice becomes a “plug-in” that apps use to generate speech that sounds like you.

You’ll choose a Type-to-Speak (TTS) app to use your voice. Compatibility varies by voice and app, each with its own pros and cons ( see our Voicing Apps guide).

The app is installed on a phone, tablet, or dedicated AAC device.

VOICE, APP, and DEVICE must all be compatible! Compatibility is shown in more detail in our Guides to 01 Traditional Voice Synthesis, 02 AI Voice Cloning and 03 Voicing App.

Through the magic of technology, you then can type or text to generate speech that sounds like YOU!!

01  Traditional Voice Synthesis.

Untitled_edited_edited_edited.png

A Traditional Synthesized Voice can sound very similar to your natural voice, but it is often somewhat monotone, lacking expression and intonation. It typically requires a one-time purchase and works on phones, tablets, and dedicated AAC devices—making it a good choice if you need larger buttons, simplified controls, or eye-tracking.

Most services require you to still be able to speak and involve 2–7 hours of recording (not all at once). Some companies can enhance voices that are already compromised.

If possible, record with more than one company. Results vary, and different voices work better with different apps—so this increases your chances of finding your best match.

Even if you want to do AI Voice Cloning, we strongly recommend you still create a traditionally cloned voice. Cloning services charge monthly with character use limits, ie how much you speak. Software applications to use AI Voice Clones for daily communication are just coming to market. To date we only know of ONE, the Whisper app.

See 01 Traditional Voice Synthesis for information on companies that provide this service.

02  AI Cloned voice.

Untitled_edited_edited_edited.png

AI Cloned Voices can be virtually indistinguishable from your natural voice. They capture your intonation, cadence, and speed, and can even interpret tone based on content.  Unlike traditional synthesis, cloning services typically charge an ongoing monthly fee. Each time you generate speech, it is created in the cloud, so an internet connection is required. We strongly recommend preparing an AI voice clone, as this technology is rapidly evolving and likely to replace traditional synthesis.

AI Voice Cloning requires a high-quality digital (.wav) recording ranging from about 2 minutes to 2+ hours. The longer and better the recording, the more accurate your cloned voice will be. One of the easiest ways to achieve this is with a digital recorder such as the Zoom H1 Essential.

Currently, AI Cloned Voices are primarily used on tablets and computers. While they provide a rich, highly realistic voice, they were initially developed for film, business, voiceovers, and gaming. WE only know of ONE effective real time app for communication using only ONE AI Cloned voice Service. The app is Whisper  and the Cloning service is ElevenLabs. Most ai clone companies charge monthly and limit usage by number of characters, which may make them less affordable for some users.

While there are phone apps for Cloned Voices they are not designed as daily communication tools and thus are too clumsy and often expensive, to use conversationally. At current, the only communication based app we are aware of is the Whisper app (and its FREE!). This arena is rapidly evolving, so expect to see great things in the near future!

03  Use your VOICE!

Losing the ability to speak can be deeply traumatic, often leading to isolation and a loss of identity. Regaining your voice through an AI Cloned or Traditional Synthesized Voice can be transformative, restoring confidence and helping you express yourself and reconnect with loved ones.

After your voice is created, you will need to “plug it in” to a Voicing App on your device. Because these apps differ significantly, we’ve compiled a list of our top Voicing App recommendations.

Using a smartphone voicing app is convenient, but typing fast enough to keep up with conversation can be challenging. Tablets may also slow you down due to lack of tactile feedback, so a Bluetooth keyboard is worth considering. Since phone and tablet volume can be limited, pairing with a Bluetooth speaker is also advisable.

We understand not everyone is comfortable with texting or touch typing. While practice improves speed, many apps offer customizable “buttons” for frequently used words and phrases. For those with mobility challenges, a dedicated AAC device can be especially helpful. It's also valuable to note, that facial recognition/ lip reading apps are already under development. It's worth recording now regardless of your skill level as options will evolve!

Dedicated AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) devices provide extensive pre-set buttons and can include eye-tracking bars for hands-free use. They require custom programming, and while some tech-savvy users can manage setup, we strongly recommend working with a speech-language pathologist (SLP) or manufacturer representative. Funding can be a challenge, as many insurance companies do not cover AAC devices, and costs typically range from $5,000 to $10,000.

HELP! I already lost my origin voice!

VBN is working toward getting information about voice synthesis in the hands of every person at risk, so they have the opportunity to Voice Bank NOW. If you have already lost your voice your options for synthesis are more limited, but you are not out of options! Traditional Voice Synthesis is available with pre-recorded voice clips from a few companies. And if you can find at least 2 minutes of good quality recording of your voice, than AI Voice Cloning might be right for you.
